Global Warming Presentation

Problem & Solution

Global warming is one of the most serious challenges facing us today. If we stop a moment and ask ourselves what are the causes of global warming everybody will answer “us”. So if we are the main causes for this huge disaster we must reduce our emissions of heat-trapping gases by using the technology. The definition of global warming is an increase in the earth's temperature due to fossil fuels, industry, and agricultural processes caused by human, natural, and other gas emissions. Temperatures have increased by 0.75 °C (1.35 °F) relative to the period 1860–1900; according to the instrumental temperature record ("Global Warming" Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia http://en.wikipedia.org/). If the temperatures continue to increase it will lead to melting polar ice-caps and then will raise the sea level, which could cause flooding affecting millions of people.
I measured my carbon footprint in ("Carbon Footprint." WWF Footprint Calculator http://footprint.wwf.org.uk/).and it was 3.30. It’s actually close to my class average which was 3.86. By the way, the United Arab Emirates recorded the highest rate of carbon footprint in the world per person. So I think I’m a normal person compared to my friends, because we have a desert climate so we need air-conditioners to cool ourselves. Personally I believe in solar energy, therefore we must use it because it’s a clean energy.
An Inconvenient Truth is a movie which talks about the global warming and climate changes directed by Davis Guggenheim and presented by Albert Arnold "Al" Gore. It talked about the huge increasing number of the population and the results of it. Brandon Fibbs agrees with Al Gore that our planet is heating up and that we are primarily responsible for it ("Review." Brandon Fibbs http://www.bigpicturebigsound.com/article_765.shtml). Also he said that if things are even half as bad as Al Gore says in his show, we are very likely looking at the end of all humankind. Scott commented that the movie doesn’t seem to be about global warming ("Inconvenient Truth." ThreeMovieBuffs.com: Movie Reviews! Scott..)

Cool City

According to the video the whole world nowadays is facing a big problem which is population pressure & CO2 emissions. If the governments don't act to solve these problems, we'll need another earth to live in but as everyone knows that is clearly impossible. Because only the governments could affect people. We must reduce the carbon emissions by 50%. In Japan during the last 30 years, the energy efficiency has increased by 37% and oil consumption decreased by 8%. Compared to the other nations Japan has the lowest rate in carbon emissions, for example France, UK and Italy. About 90% of the carbon dioxide that comes to the earth is from buildings and transport. There are a group of Japanese companies called SDCJ which contains 11 corporations; they begin to accomplish a cool earth project for the Gulf region. They will develop cool cities with high technologies and a big cool city network. They will be connected by a public transportation system. The cool city is an environmentally friendly green city with minimal CO2 emissions. There will be heat-reducing techniques which such as tree-planting, waterways and rooftop membranes.
Opinion:-
Personally, I believe that it will be a great idea to reduce the carbon emissions but I think it’s not suitable for locals. The foreigners will have a good chance with this project because it will be similar with their lifestyle.

Traditions weigh on China's women summary

China is the only country where the number of women who commit suicide is greater than the men. Many women attempted to take their own lives but few of them succeed. The suicide rate in the rural area is three times higher than in the cities. The head of the Suicide Prevention in China, says that it’s easy to find poisons in agricultural areas. Some rural women try to use the pesticide to commit suicide; they just grab some of it and drink it. Suicide attempts may often be impulsive, but they are the result of burdens on rural women. Customs and traditions in China urge grooms to buy the bride, and then she becomes part of his family. The head of the Suicide Prevention believes that these traditional things lead to emotional problems for young wives who leave their own family and friends to enter an alien environment. Also she estimates that 70-80% of suicides are the direct result of conflicts between husbands and wives. If a woman goes to live with her husband's family and they treat her well, the suicide rate will decrease quickly. Some women attempt suicide as a way of asking for better treatment from their husbands. But traditional attitudes are hard to change. According to the official figures, for every one hundred baby girls born in China 117 boys are born. Women will face an even more terrible future in 20 years time.

Main idea:

The number of women in China is decreasing because of suicide. The government tries to find a solution for this problem. They have studied the advantages and the disadvantages for this problem, and what could happen in the future.

Opinion:

Personally, I believe that the women in China must have better treatment from their husbands. They can solve this problem since China is the most populous country in the world. The government must prevent poisons, and try to find another way to kill insects; for example get animals that feed on those insects. Although, they can publish articles that encourage people not to commit suicide.

My Carbon Footprint

I measured my carbon footprint in http://footprint.wwf.org.uk/ and it was 3.30.

The carbon footprint is actually greenhouse gases which come from companies, hotels, factories, etc. My carbon footprint rate is close to my class aver

age which was 4.0. The United Arab Emirates have the highest rate of carbon footprint in the world per person.
There are many steps to reduce my carbon footprint.
Travel: I travel usually once a year when I go overseas. But inside the city I always travel by my own car. I never travel by bus or train. Honestly I hate buses because I think they are producing too much footprint. Personally, I go to Ras Al Khaimh every week and I think that’s why my footprint is high. I must reduce the number of trips I do every day to decrease my carbon footprint.
Home: My meals are usually based on rice and chicken. I eat sometimes meat and fish twice a week. I think my food is healthy because I hate fast food and I like vegetables. To be honest I don’t like sports but I try to keep my body fit and healthy as much as I can.

Review's

A favorable review:

Brandon Fibbs, http://www.bigpicturebigsound.com/article_765.shtml , Says:

Because there is so much evidence in Al Gore’s movie and most of the scientists agree with him. I also agree with him about the global warming, because he showed us some pictures and some graphs that explain what he was trying to tell us. Al Gore’s movie viewed some after and before photos to convent his message. Brandon agrees with Al Gore that our planet is heating up and that we are primarily responsible for it. Also he said that if things are even half as bad as Al Gore says in his show, we are very likely looking at the end of all humankind. I disagree with him on this point, because Al Gore made the things much bigger than it looks like. Even though Al Gore says that in a few years we will face a lot of troubles because of melting water, I think that it will be much longer. In my opinion everyone who sees this movie will feel guilty and he will do something about global warming.

An unfavorable review:

Scott, http://www.threemoviebuffs.com/review.php?movieID=inconvenienttruth , Says:

There are three important negative points that he thinks are bad. The first and foremost point is that Al Gore jokes against Bush and other Republicans. The second point is that the central point of the movie doesn’t seem to be about global warming. The third point is that Al Gore talks about his sister and it isn’t relevant to the subject. When his sister died from cancer and he says that we must not grow tobacco from now on. Scott felt sorry so do I, but he should not try to emotionally manipulate us with that fact. If I were Al Gore I would do the same thing, that I must let the show be more interesting and funny; that’s why I disagree with Scott’s points.

My opinion:

I think that Al Gore did a great job, by convincing the people all around the world about the global warming. By the way, this wasn’t an easy job that Al Gore did. He is a perfect man and deserves praise. His show contains everything about the global warming and it has all the information about what might happen to the earth in the future.

An Inconvenient Truth - Al Gore

An Inconvenient Truth is a movie which talks about the global warming and climate changes directed by Davis Guggenheim and presented by Albert Arnold "Al" Gore. The idea of the movie come from a slide show directed by talented people in Hollywood. Actually, the film was so long it took over an hour to reach the end. But it was so interesting to me, because Al Gore is a good presenter and he is a funny guy too. Al Gore talked about the huge increasing number of the population. This problem leads the governments to produce more power like electricity and that of course will damage the environment. Because in many countries they burn oil and gases for electricity. Even more important for our growing number is that the technologies we use now are thousands of times more powerful than the ones our grandparents used. Also Al Gore said that we are in a different relationship with our planet and all of us take responsibility for it. The good news is we can become much more productive and raise our chance of living in a right way as we cut down on all this pollution. I think this presentation covered all the things about the global warming and this movie deserves the Nobel Prize. I heard from a different video in YouTube that Bush would not see this movie but that’s why Al Gore wrote the book.

Riches await as Earth’s icy north melts

Denmark and Canada are fighting each other to claim Hans Island which has a good position on the map. The reasons are to race for oil, fish, diamonds and shipping routes. The ice cap is warming faster than any other place in the world because of the greenhouse gases. This problem will affect especially the polar bears and the people who depend on the frozen water to drink. The U.S. Geological Survey estimates that there is 25 percent of the world’s undiscovered oil and gas in the Arctic. This survey made the governments fight for these undiscovered areas. Climate change will make sailing to and from cold countries easier and faster than before. However, the Russian ship was the first to reach the North Pole without an icebreaker’s help. There are some old studies which said that the ice in North Pole will melt in 100 years, but the latest studies say it will take 10-15 years to melt. Canada and Denmark have repeatedly sent warships to Hans island to make their presence felt, but there's no risk of a shooting war. Both sides are resolved to settle the problem peacefully.
Main idea:
Governments are racing to reach undiscovered areas to get the oil and gas. Global warming helps countries to reach undiscovered cold places. Canada and Denmark resolved their problems peacefully.
Opinion:
I think countries must think of a better idea than fighting for oil and gas. If they share their money together and build a huge project they will definitely get huge profits. The oil will affect the global warming faster than everything else.

Task 2 ( Global Warming )

The global warming was in the past like a story to tell the children before they sleep. Nowadays it has become a main article in everybody’s mind. Even when you talk about normal things in our life it will include the global warming. We must find a way to put an end to this nightmare. Actually, there are some good steps that some governments are starting to produce. One of these steps is called “The green project”. Until now we didn’t see any benefit for this project, because the pollution is increasing every day. “Natural disasters are not all due to global warming” our teacher said. He gave us an example about the tsunami; it was caused by a volcanic eruption in Indonesia, not by the global warming. I think that the weather in the UAE was different 30 years ago; I don’t mean that there was snow here. But the temperature is increasing caused by the cars and manufactures. Also I think that this problem will be solved by growing more trees in UAE.

Task 1

My name is Hasan Najeeb Al Zaabi; I am an IT student at ADMC. I finished the foundations year and I’m now in the common year. I have five siblings, three brothers and two sisters. I was born on 8th December 1989 in Abu Dhabi. I live in a large villa in Khalifa City “A” which is a suburb of Abu Dhabi. My best hobby is to download from the Internet such as movies, games and so on. My favorite comedy actor is Jim Carrey who is an actor in “Yes man”. I also work in ADCB, Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank, as a part time job. I start from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm on Saturday only. In this semester I am studying five subjects: English 175, English 174, BMGN 150, ITEC 150 and ITEC 277. I must write about the global warming in this semester even though I hate it. I have only one point to talk about the global warming. My point is that the global warming is caused by people, and they must solve this problem as soon as they can to avoid death by diseases. Media and advertisements can make people more aware of the problems.
